I made my very own concept map! It was so easy and looks so effective. I used bubbl.us to create the above concept map and as I was playing around with it I realised it would be such an effective tool to use for any age group in the classroom setting. The fact that you can edit its colours, layout, content and ideas is a great factor for for teachers who want to incorporate concept maps into their classroom. It can be used for any unit, lesson or as simple as a class brainstorming activity. I found that I would defiantly incorporate this tool into my future classroom as it is engaging, effective and visually appealing.
Hi Renee, I found using this tool hard at the beginning because I didn’t really know what information went where and how much we had to add. In the end I got the hang of it and I really enjoyed it. Placing information into an easy-to-read format is a great way for students to understand there learnt knowledge and clearly shows their understanding of the topic. I'm not sure though how hard this would be for the early years (1-3) but for the older grades I think will suite best. What else is concept mapping good for other then the organisation of information? Maybe for assessment purposes?
ReplyDeleteKadee you could always use this tool with the early years if you did it as a class. Maybe if you had a smart board in the class room the students could suggest the words or information and the teacher could enter it in. As the students become more familiar with the tool you could let them help by typing in words and gradually doing more with the teacher's help.

ReplyDeleteI am in a year one classroom and my teacher used a mind map in the 'Australian Animals' unit. She used it to class mammals, reptials, Australian and Non-Australian animals and the kids really liked it. She printed it and laminated it and stuck images next to each bubble which helped for the children who are low literacy. Have a look on this website Kadee for more websites to create concept maps. I also feel assessment could be a possible avenue to use this tool. If the students are doing a project for example, the teacher could brainstorm possible topics as a class with the younger ones.

ReplyDeleteAs I refer this tool to the Engagement Theory by Greg Kearsley & Ben Shneiderman(1999), I discovered that this tool can effectively facilitate engagement from students rather than say a worksheet or handout would. The engagement that this tool would encourage from students would be vastly different from an individual worksheet activity.
What do you think about the Engagement Theory in relation to this tool?
